The Trophy is ordained to be challenged by a National Champion and a Russian Bandy Cup winner. Super Cup was introduced in March of 2013 in the city of Krasnogorsk, a venue of this year's encounter, and the first ever Super Cup was won by Dynamo Moscow. It is noteworthy, that by the time of the game Dynamo had been holding both main titles of the Russian bandy, just as SKA  is going for Super Cup being a double title holder this year. Since then three more teams have become Russian Super Cup winners: Dynamo Kazan, SKA-neftyanik (twice) and Yenisey Krasnoyarsk. SKA beat Yenisey in both Super Cup games: in 2015 (4-3) and in 2017 (5-3).
